하데스는 눈 깜짝할 사이에 페르세포네를 납치해
저승으로 데려갔습니다.

계속 저승에 붙잡아 두었습니다. 한편,

곡식과 과일들이 수확되지 않았습니다.

데메테르는 매일매일 딸을 그리워했습니다.

제우스는 하데스를 불러 말했습니다.
“하데스, 페르세포네를 데메테르에게 돌려주시오.”
“제우스, 그렇게 할 수는 없겠는걸.
페르세포네는 지하 세계의 음식을 먹었거든.”
“뭐라고?”
제우스는 깜짝 놀랐습니다.
저승의 음식을 먹은 자는 이승으로 올라올 수 없도록
운명의 여신들이 정해 놓았기 때문이었어요.
제우스는 하데스와 데메테르를 한자리에 불렀습니다.
“데메테르, 페르세포네가 지하 세계의 음식을 먹어
땅 위로 올라올 수 없게 되었소.
하지만 하데스, 데메테르가 땅을 돌보지 못해
인간들이 다 굶어 죽으면 큰일이지 않소.”
“제 딸을 돌려주세요!”
“페르세포네는 돌려보낼 수 없소.”
“자, 진정하고 둘 다 들어보시오.
일 년 열두 달 중 반은 이승에
나머지 반은 저승에 있도록 하는 게 어떻겠소?”
데메테르는 제우스의 제안이 마음에 들지 않았지만
다른 방법이 없어 마지못해 승낙했습니다.
하데스도 어쩔 수 없다는 듯 고개를 끄덕였습니다.
페르세포네를 다시 만난 데메테르는 행복해하며
다시 땅을 돌보기 시작했습니다.
이때부터 봄이 생겼다고 합니다.
페르세포네가 지하세계로 가면 데메테르가
슬픔에 잠겨 땅이 마르는 겨울이 오는 거랍니다.
