가족들이 모두 사자로 보였습니다. 으르렁대며
자신을 잡아먹으려고 달려드는 듯했죠.

나와 내 가족들을 잡아먹으려 하다니! 너흰 다 죽었다.”
헤라클레스는 있는 힘껏 사자들을 때려잡았습니다.
사자들은 모두 두들겨맞아 깨갱거리며 죽고 말았습니다.
헤라클레스는 뿌듯한 마음으로 죽은 사자들을
내려다봤어요. 눈앞이 일렁이며 사자들이 점점
사람 형태로 변해갔습니다. 제정신이 돌아온 것입니다.
때려눕힌 사자들은 사자가 아닌 사랑하는
아내와 아이들이었습니다.
“분명히 사자였는데.. 이럴 수가…
사랑하는 가족들을 내 손으로 죽이다니..!”
헤라클레스는 더 이상 살 가치를 느끼지 못해
죽기로 결심했습니다.
“내가 살아서 무엇을 한단 말인가.
가족들을 만나서 사죄를 할 것이다.”
이때, 헤라클레스의 집으로 놀러 온 테세우스가
그 모습을 보고 놀라 헤라클레스를 말렸습니다.
“헤라클레스, 이게 무슨 짓인가! 당장 그만둬!”
테세우스는 헤라클레스의 가장 친한 친구였어요.
헤라클레스는 손을 벌벌 떨며 말했습니다.
“내가 미쳐서 가족들을 모두 죽이고 말았어.
내 죽음으로 죄를 씻어내려 하네.”
테세우스가 안타까운 표정으로 말했습니다.
“그렇다고 목숨을 끊어서는 안돼.
신탁을 들어보는 건 어떻겠나?”
헤라클레스는 테세우스와 델포이 신전으로 가
신탁을 들었습니다.
“제 죄를 씻으려면 어찌해야 합니까?”
“미케네의 왕 에우리스테우스가 시키는
12가지 과업을 완수하도록 하여라.”
