나무꾼은 산속에서
열심히 나무를 베고 또 베었어요.

달려오고 있는 소리가 들렸어요.
타닥! 타닥! 점점 소리는 가까워져 왔어요.
“나무꾼님! 나무꾼님! 저 좀 살려주세요…!”
“앗, 사슴이잖아…! 무슨 일이지?”
“사냥꾼이 저를 잡으려고
쫓아오고 있어요.
저 좀 숨겨주세요…!”
“그… 그래. 일단 여기 이 풀숲에 들어가 있으렴!”
나무꾼은 사슴의 간곡한 부탁을 듣고
풀숲을 헤쳐 그곳에 사슴을 숨겨 주었어요.
그리고 이내 무섭게 생긴 사냥꾼이
나무꾼이 있는 쪽으로 달려왔죠.
“어이 나무꾼 양반~!
혹시 여기 뛰어가는 사슴 못 보았는가?”
“저는 나무를 계속 베느라
보지 못했습니다…!”
“하아 이것 참… 분명 이쪽으로 온 걸
내 두 눈으로 똑똑히 보았는데 말이야…”
순간 사슴뿔이 사냥꾼 등 뒤로 보이며
나뭇잎이 흔들리는 소리가 들렸어요.
나무꾼은 재빨리 눈치를 채고
일부러 재채기를 하며 말했어요.
“에취! 흠… 아마 저쪽으로 간 듯합니다.
어서 가보세요!”
“그런가? 에잇!”
나무꾼은 사슴이 숨겨진
반대쪽을 가리키며 말했고
사냥꾼은 다시 급히 달려갔어요.
그리고 사냥꾼이 떠난 그제야 한숨을 쉬며
살며시 사슴이 있는 쪽으로 갔어요.
“자, 이제 사냥꾼은 떠났어, 나와도 괜찮아…!”
“나무꾼님 정말 감사합니다.
제 목숨을 살려주셨어요…!”
사슴의 눈가에 눈물이 촉촉하게 맺혔어요.
그리고 어딘가로 갑자기
따라오라고 손짓을 했죠.
“나무꾼님! 제가 감사 인사를
꼭 하고 싶어서요.
어서 저를 따라오세요.”
나무꾼은 사슴을 따라갔어요.
어디론가 산속 깊숙이 한참을 들어갔어요.
그런데 이 길은 나무꾼도
처음 보는 희한한 곳이었어요.
그리고 마침에 어디론가 도착했어요.
“나무꾼님. 여기서는 절대로
목소리를 내서는 안 된답니다.
왜냐하면 선녀들이 눈치채면
연못이 금방 사라지거든요…!”
“선녀…? 연못….?”
나무꾼은 어리둥절하며
사슴이 가리키는 곳을 보았어요.
그러자 눈앞에 신기한 풍경이 펼쳐졌어요.
바로 하늘에서 선녀들이 내려와
연못에서 목욕을 하고 있는 것이
아니겠어요?!
“이곳은 선녀들만 올 수 있는
특별한 연못인데,
사람의 눈에 띄지 않도록
이 깊숙한 곳에서 가끔
목욕을 하고 올라가요.”
“이럴 수가… 하늘에서
선녀들이 내려오다니…

목욕을 끝낸 선녀들이
차례로 날개옷을 찾아 입기 시작했어요.
선녀 몇 명이 먼저 하늘로 올라가고
연못에는 여전히 몇 명의 선녀들이
남아있었죠.
“저 날개옷을, 내가 가져가면…
한 명의 선녀는 하늘로 올라가지 못하겠지…?

나무꾼이 고민하는 중에 연못 끝에 있는
