그런 나무꾼에게 아들과 딸이 있었어요.
아들의 이름은 헨젤이었고 딸의 이름은 그레텔이었어요.
헨젤과 그레텔도 아빠와 마찬가지로 늘
추위와 배고픔에 허덕였지만 헨젤과 그레텔은
언제나 웃음을 잃지 않으려고 노력하며
항상 서로를 위하며 하루하루 즐겁게 살아가려고 애썼습니다.

흔들리고 말았어요. 어느새 나무꾼마저 헨젤과 그레텔 때문에
모든 가난이 시작됐다고 믿고 있었습니다.
나무꾼은 헨젤과 그레텔을 데리고 깊은 숲속으로 들어갔습니다.
평생을 숲에서만 지낸 나무꾼조차 자칫 방심하면
길을 잃어버릴 만큼 아주 깊고 복잡한 숲속으로 말이에요.
나무꾼은 계모의 계획에 따라
그 둘을 숲속에 버려두고 혼자서만 빠져나올 생각이었어요.
하지만 계모가 나무꾼을 꼬드기는 것을 지켜보며
모든 계획을 미리 알고 있던 헨젤은 그레텔을 시켜서
모아 두었던 하얀 조약돌들을 주머니에 넣어둔 채로
나무꾼을 따라나섰습니다. 나무꾼 뒤를 조용히 따라가며
나무꾼 몰래 하얀 조약돌들을 하나씩
땅바닥에 떨어트리면서 말이에요.
깊은 숲에 다다르고 날이 어두워지자 나무꾼은 헨젤과 그레텔이
눈치채지 못하도록 혼자 몰래 집으로 돌아왔습니다.
계모는 혼자 돌아온 나무꾼을 보자
마침내 헨젤과 그레텔이 없어졌다고 생각하며 크게 기뻐했어요.
하지만 뒤이어 헨젤과 그레텔도 집으로 돌아왔습니다.
헨젤이 나무꾼 몰래 땅바닥에 떨어트려 놓은 조약돌들을 따라서
돌아왔던 것이었어요. 아무리 숲속 길이 복잡해도
헨젤과 그레텔은 조약돌만 따라오면 되는 것이었습니다.
자기 뜻대로 되지 않아서 머리끝까지 화가 난 계모는
불같이 화를 내며 그 자리에서 바로
헨젤과 그레텔을 쫓아냈습니다. 헨젤과 그레텔은
계모가 너무나 무서워서 그대로 다시 깊은 숲속으로
도망 나올 수밖에 없었어요. 날은 이미 어두워졌고,
주머니엔 하얀 조약돌 대신
낮에 먹다 남은 빵 부스러기만 남아있었습니다.
헨젤과 그레텔은 날이 밝으면 다시 집으로 돌아가
계모의 눈을 피해 아빠를 먼저 만나야겠다고 생각했어요.
이번에도 길을 잃지 않기 위해 조약돌 대신
빵 부스러기를 길바닥에 조금씩 흘리며
계속해서 길을 나아갔답니다. 헨젤과 그레텔은
곧 집으로 다시 돌아갈 수 있을 거란 생각에
크게 걱정하지 않았어요.
하지만 예상하지 못한 일이 벌어지고 말았어요.
숲속에 살고 있던 새들이 길바닥에 떨어진 빵 부스러기를
모두 쪼아먹어버렸기 때문이에요. 날이 밝아
집으로 돌아가려던 헨젤과 그레텔은 크게 당황했어요.
길바닥을 아무리 살펴봐도 집으로 돌아가는 길을 표시했던
빵 부스러기를 찾을 수가 없었어요.
길을 잃은 헨젤과 그레텔은 발이 닿는 대로 길을 걸었어요.
둘은 점점 더 깊은 숲속으로 들어가게 됐답니다.
배고픔에 지쳐 더 이상 걷기도 힘들어질 때쯤
저 멀리 고소한 냄새를 풍기는 밝은 빛이 보였습니다.
빛을 따라간 헨젤과 그레텔의 눈앞에 펼쳐진 것은
과자로 만들어진 집이었어요. 바삭바삭 비스킷과
달콤달콤 사탕으로 가득 찬 색색 젤리들로 만들어진 과자집은
헨젤과 그레텔을 기다리고 있었다는 듯
반짝거리며 빛나고 있었습니다.
헨젤과 그레텔은 깊게 생각할 겨를도 없이
집 이곳저곳을 뜯어먹기 시작했어요. 과자들이 너무 맛있어서
과자집 문이 열리는 것도 몰랐어요. 문이 열리며 나타난 것은
과자집의 주인인 마녀였어요. 마녀는 과자집을 뜯어 먹느라
정신없는 헨젤과 그레텔을 불러 집 안으로 들어오게 했습니다.
집 안에는 더 맛있는 것이 많다는 말에 헨젤과 그레텔은
눈빛을 반짝거리며 집으로 들어갔습니다.
마녀는 헨젤과 그레텔에게 따뜻한 수프를 내어주었습니다.
배도 부르고 따뜻한 수프까지 다 먹고 났더니
눈이 스르르 감기기 시작했어요. 마녀가 수프에
잠이 쏟아지는 약을 몰래 타 두었던 것이었어요.
깊은 잠에 빠져 있던 헨젤이 눈을 떴습니다.
헨젤이 눈 뜬 곳은 좁은 방에 차가운 바닥으로 되어 있는
작은 감옥이었습니다. 감옥 밖에선 동생 그레텔이

꼼짝없이 마녀에게 잡아먹힐 것 같았거든요.
헨젤은 꾀를 내어 감옥 바닥에 굴러다니고 있던
뼈다귀를 주웠어요. 감옥 창살 사이로 뼈다귀를
대신 내밀었습니다. 눈이 안 좋았던 마녀는
뼈다귀를 만져보더니 실망했어요.
마녀는 헨젤을 통통하게 살이 찐 상태에서
잡아먹고 싶어 했기 때문이에요. 마녀는 시간을 들여
헨젤에게 먹을 것을 계속 갖다주었습니다.
하지만 시간이 지나도 헨젤은 살이 찌지 않았어요.
헨젤이 매번 팔 대신 뼈다귀를 내밀었기 때문이에요.
인내심이 바닥난 마녀는 화를 내며 그레텔부터
잡아먹기로 했어요. 그레텔에게 아주 커다란 냄비에
물을 끓이게 시켰어요. 마녀는 물이 끓으면
그레텔을 집어넣어 잡아먹을 생각이었답니다.
그레텔은 마녀에게 잡아먹히기 전에 무슨 수라도 내야 했어요.
그때 그레텔에게 아주 좋은 생각이 났습니다.
그레텔은 커다란 냄비의 물이 끓기 시작하자
마녀를 불러 냄비 뚜껑이 열리지 않는다고 거짓말을 했어요.
마녀는 화를 내며 자기가 직접
냄비 뚜껑을 열려고 했습니다. 눈이 안 좋았던 마녀는
냄비 뚜껑을 살펴보려 가까이 다가가 고개를 숙였어요.
하지만, 사실은 냄비 뚜껑은 처음부터 닫혀 있지 않았어요.
그레텔이 마녀를 유인해낸 것이었습니다.
그레텔은 마녀가 냄비 가까이 고개를 숙이자마자
있는 힘껏 마녀의 엉덩이를 걷어차 밀어버렸습니다.
풍덩- 마녀는 뜨거운 냄비에 그대로 빠져서
죽어버리고 말았어요. 그레텔은 감옥 열쇠를 찾아
헨젤을 감옥에서 꺼내 주었습니다.
무서운 마녀는 사라졌고 둘은 다시 만날 수 있었어요.
둘은 부둥켜안고 크게 기뻐했습니다. 헨젤과 그레텔은
집으로 돌아가 아빠를 보고 싶은 마음뿐이었어요.
하지만 집으로 돌아가더라도 계모에게 다시 내쫓길까 봐
걱정이었어요. 헨젤과 그레텔은 마녀의 집에 머물며
마녀가 숨겨두었던 보석을 찾게 됐습니다.
이 정도의 보석이라면 아빠와 함께
더 이상 가난하게 살지 않을 수 있었어요.
더 이상 아빠가 계모에게 휘둘려
자신들을 쫓아내지도 않을 거라 생각했습니다.
하지만 헨젤과 그레텔은 집으로 돌아가는 길을 몰랐어요.
그때였어요. 하늘에 백조가 나타나
헨젤과 그레텔에게 다가왔어요. 백조는 마녀의 저주에 걸려
백조가 되어버렸던 공주님이었어요.
마녀를 원수로 생각하고 있던 백조는
마녀를 없애준 두 남매에게 크게 고마워하며
둘을 집으로 데려다주기로 했어요. 헨젤과 그레텔은
백조의 등에 올라타 집으로 돌아갔습니다.
한편, 나무꾼은 계모의 꼬임에 넘어가
헨젤과 그레텔을 쫓아낸 것이 너무 후회스러워
매일 눈물을 흘리며 지내고 있었어요.
계모는 이미 병들어 죽고 없었고요.
헨젤과 그레텔이 보고 싶었던 나무꾼은 하늘을 올려다보며
자신을 원망했습니다. 그때 나무꾼은 믿지 못할 광경에
눈을 비볐습니다. 꿈에 그리던 헨젤과 그레텔이
하늘에서 손을 흔들며 내려오고 있었어요.
헨젤과 그레텔은 아빠에게 달려가 안겼습니다.
나무꾼은, 반짝이는 보석들보다 헨젤과 그레텔을 보고
